The Yellow Payges were a psychedelic band who evolved from an earlier surf incarnation known as the Driftones. Formed by Dave Travis in September 1965 prior to Hortter's joining, the Driftones regularly appeared in Southern California's Torrance, Redondo Beach, and Hermosa Beach areas. Primarily playing South Bay gigs, they did manage to land a few higher profile appearances - by which time Hortter was a member - including Countdown '65, a series of Battle of the Bands that featured the best groups in the area.
