Joseph Silverstein (born March 21, 1932) is an American violinist and conductor. He was born in Detroit and studied with his father, who was a public school music teacher. Silverstein studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Efrem Zimbalist, and also studied with William Primrose, and Mischa Mischakoff. In 1962, he became concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for 22 years. He was appointed assistant conductor in 1971.
