James Mangrum headed a small gang of misfits who became a band, "Knowbody Else", after being unable to find a job. However, they were run out of town for stealing instruments. They moved to New Orleans and recorded a Stax record that went nowhere. The band, consisting of vocalist Mangrum, guitarists Ricky "Ricochet" Reynolds, Stanley "Goober" Knight, and Harvey "Burley" Jett, bassist Pat Daugherty, and drummer Wayne Evans changed their name to "Black Oak Arkansas" (after James' hometown Black Oak, Arkansas) and released a string of albums with much more success.
